What is our goal?
In this project, students from around the world will come together to follow the journey of two bald eagles, Liberty and Justice. Through the use of the ALCOA eagle camera and various online platforms students will create their own website using this wiki to explain to the world about bald eagles. Students will be divided up into various teams focusing on key aspects of bald eagles.
After we research our topics, each team will be tasked to create a compelling video together on your topic, so make sure you save great high resolution screenshots and videos as you find them for use in the final project.
What will we be learning?
Writing, Reading, Co-Creating Standards
We will compare and contrast the research you find and the author's conclusion in his book.
We will determine the purpose and motives of various media as we work to determine credible sources of information on trends in society.
We will compare and contrast individuals, ideas, and events in our book and research.
We will evaluate the advantages of different formats to present a topic as we determine which research should be shared in our text and which should be in pictures or embedded videos, and which should be in our final vision explaining the topic to the world.
We will be writing for multiple audiences: classmates, collaborators, and the world.
We will be examining how the author addresses differing facts and opinions and work to address differing facts and opinions as we co-create.
Technology Standards (ISTE NETS)
This project has been designed to meet every
ISTE NETS Standard for students
. These standards are designed to help teachers design activities that prepare students for a technological world requiring a new set of thinking and problem solving abilities. Here are some of those standards with what you'll be doing to meet that standard in the parentheses. We want you to know WHY you're doing what you're doing.
1, Creativity and Innovation:
You will demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology.
a. You will apply what you already know to generate new ideas, products, and processes.
(Creating the wiki and video on your topic.)
b. You will create original works as a means of personal
(Discussion on Edmodo and sharing out class work on wiki)
(wikis and videos) e
c. You will use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues.
(We will seek experts and other pieces of information to learn more about the eagles to further understand what we see on the camera)
d. Identify trends and forecast possibilities
(This whole project is geared for you to understand the bald eagle so you can observe behaviors and actions on the camera to figure out what is going on and what will be happening.)
2. Communication and Collaboration:
You will be using digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others.
(Google Hangout, Edmodo),
(wiki and video),
(wiki and video)
(project leaders and authors and experts you may interact with on social media and on their personal authoring spaces)
, or others
(our final projects will be published publicly)
using a variety of media and formats
(wiki, multimedia, photography, video)
b. Communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats.
(wiki, multimedia, photography, video, social media as we share what we're doing, presentations via online presentation tools)
c. Develop cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with learners of other cultures.
(International survey of students about opinions on trends and soliciting feedback.)
d. Contribute to project teams to produce original works or solve problems.
3. Research and Information Fluency
Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information.
a. Plan strategies to guide inquiry (use the wiki discussion threads to pose questions, leave comments about additional questions, and guide the research process)
b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources of media
(we cite sources, we quote on a limited basis, and we never plagiarize
. Your work should be original.)
c. Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks.
(Students will curate and evaluate sources of information as they research bald eagles to find out more about how they have adapted to stay alive)
d. Process data and report results.
(You will be capturing information about the eagles on a daily basis.)
4. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making
Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources.
a. Identify and define authentic problems and significant questions for investigation.
(You will be asked to observe the eagles and be prepared to find solutions or ideas to why they act the way they do)
Plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a project.
c. Collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions
(We will provide polls and surveys among students to gather our ideas.)
d. Use multiple processes and diverse perspectives to explore alternative solutions.
(You will use books, online research, and interactions online with modern experts to solicit multiple perspectives and explore alternative solutions and conclusions to those in the book or proposed by experts.)
